Chapter 11

Ruby, Isabel, Paige, Estelle, and Carol sat on pillows cross- legged in a circle on the bedroom floor. The spirit board was lying on top of a pillow in front of them.

“Everyone close your eyes.” She instructed. “Lightly lay the index finger of your right hand on the planchette. Concentrate on calling a spirit. Now ladies, don’t push the planchette. Let it move on it’s on. After a few minutes of silence, Ruby began. “We’re calling the spirits that live in this house to come and talk to us. Show yourselves. Come forth spirits, come forth. You’re welcome to come in. The door is open. The door is open, come in. Talk to us. Tell us about your life when you were alive and lived in this great house. Is there anything we can do for you? Anything you need to make your life here easier? Just ask.” The women sat in silence waiting for something to happen. A sound. A knocking. Scratching on the walls, a word or two coming from far away, anything.

The strong ocean wind blew the front door open. It flew back and hit the door stop with a loud bang.

The men playing cards in the dining room all looked up at the same time. Parker folded his cards and laid them face down on the table. He hurried into the hall and closing the front door, turned the lock and went back to the table. “It was only the wind, It blew the door open,” he said.

Helmut didn’t move when Marta called out to him from the stairs. “I’m warning you now Helmut, don’t do anything to get us tossed out of our home again.”

“Quiet woman, keep your place and telling me what to do is not keeping your place.” Helmet turned and went to stand in the doorway to watch the card game.

Oliver Pierce and Nicolas Conner passed Helmut on their way up to the attic. They nodded agreeing with Marta’s orders to Helmut not to anger the owners until we were ready to scare them out of the house for good.

“I’ll be up soon,” Helmut promised. “I just want to watch the card game for a few minutes. It’s been so long since I’ve been able to enjoy a game with friends.

Looking around the hall Helmut couldn’t believe what he saw. How hideous. Just look how they’ve ruined the walls with their tacky paint color. What color is that? Mud? And, they painted over our beautiful dark walnut woodwork with stark white paint. Helmut admitted that the wood over the years had taken a beating from the many people had had live or visited the house. It had become scratched and dented. It needed work but to paint it white? He looked closely for the big dents and scratches he remembered but they were gone. That woman must have filled the damage with something before she painted. That was good however what she’s done is certainly not, what was in style back in the early eighteen hundreds when he’d had the house built.
